So my usual £60 weekly food shop came out at well over a hundred and I’ll still end up topping up on fresh bits. I’m lucky. I’m on maternity leave and money is tight. If hubs has to be off work and on statutory sick pay for two weeks’ things will be very, very tight. But only beans on toast tight, not squeaky bum, we can’t pay the mortgage, rent or must chose between eating or having the heating on tight. Not the sort of tight that means I have to decide whether I eat or my baby eats. Or whether we have to play camping in the only room I can afford to heat. That’s a scary reality some people will be facing. So tomorrow I’m going to brave the crowds and face the supermarket again, doing a shop not for me but for my local food bank. I’ve sold some bits on eBay – I’m going to use that money. This is an unprecedented challenge and food banks will continue to provide the lifeline of emergency food – but this time having to sustain people potentially for long periods of time. They need all the help they can get.
